's pavilion collapsed. What do you think of it?
The pavilion collapsed before we visited there. Many people, including me, are asking if the reason for the collapse of the pavilion is an artistic behavior or an irrational structure. I did not get a direct answer from teacher for sure. It is possible that teacher would like to make the pavilion standing proudly on the grass under Kassel's blue sky. However, rain destroyed the pavilion because of technical problems. Fortunately, the pavilion collapsed in Kassel Documenta instead of La Biennale di Venezia. The identity of this trip is of a Chinese contemporary artist rather that a famous architect. As for the identity of teacher , someone mentioned that he never regarded himself as an architect. But it is undeniable that he is working on architecture and it is disappointing for an artist with architecture experience that the pavilion collapsed. It seems that teacher should make more effort when he is involved in architecture next time.
Many people left online messages that the collapse of the pavilion symbolized the disintegration of something in China and this unexpected event endowed his work a deeper meaning, etc. For these statements, I would like to imitate teacher 's tone and say: bullshit. Can it be fortunate for someone who suffered amputation from a car accident just because it enriched his life? Although the old window sash has no life, the broken situation wrings people's heart. Architecture such as this have suffered much destruction in China; however, it did not change its fate even out of China. How unfortunate!
How do you understand art?
Frankly speaking, I am confused by art nowadays. What is art? Movie, TV, music, literature, painting and calligraphy, dancing, etc. If it is so, then art is extremely important since it almost encompasses our thoughts. Without art, we might experience the most primitive human beings' life. However, most of the time, we have been used to the fact that we regard these experiences as part of our life, even as natural as sleep and dining rather than flaunt them using the label of art. Maybe it is just my own view as an outsider.
What does an artist look like? I think my mom is in a better position to answer this question. She always uses one sentence to criticize someone--"Act like an artist." It implies a young person with green and razor-style hair. I thought she might say rogue before she finally popped out the word "artist." I am not sure whether rogues learn something from artists or artists are rogues, anyway, they have some common words in their styling.
I ran across a normal person in Kassel. After chatting for a while, he suddenly said "I am an artist." It is the first time I heard such a formal answer and I realized artists are really extraordinary either in their look or words. I am speechless.
